Embracing Magic

I love magic. I love the idea that there is something else out there just beyond my understanding. It’s enough to excite me and get my imagination running and tumbling over itself with what-ifs. How do we know it isn’t real…maybe on some sphere that we can’t yet fully grasp?

The fantasy genre has been huge for many, many years. Movies like Twilight and TV shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer responded to a call for the supernatural but it wasn’t a new call. We were always intrigued by the idea that there is something else out there. Just check Reddit and you will see tons of communities devoted to aliens, UFO sightings and other such phenomena. It’s enough to prove that people want to believe that there is something outside of our normal experience. Maybe we don't understand it but it certainly makes day-to-day life more interesting.

I’m not a fan of horror, but that's not what I'm talking about. It doesn’t have to scare the bejesus out of you. I'm thinking about the wonder of the supernatural. Cinderella's fairy godmother never brought fear into any little kid's life. I was that little girl who was just intrigued, even when her carriage turned into a pumpkin - it was the wonder of it. Even now I can visualize the rats who were previously handsomely dressed footmen, scurrying away from the big orange pumpkin that used to be a beautiful carriage.

It captured my imagination in the same way that Disney’s Frozen has dominated the imagination of kids for years now. They can’t get enough of it. As of this writing, the Disney animation team is busy at work with plans for Frozen 4.

Magic is just….Magic.

I wrote the Psychic Sisters series in response to my curiosity about the effect of the supernatural on our lives; inexplicable abilities that we may have, events that occur that we don't quite understand, and how they can affect our lives. I wanted to explore how we can relinquish fear, and try to understand and even use it in a way that benefits ourselves and others.

Edie, Jade, and Abby saw all the negative effects of a supernatural gift in their mother’s experience and they came away fearful. But motivated by self-preservation, love, and ultimately survival, they each found a way to embrace their unique gift of magic and it led them to their happily-ever-after, kinda like Cinderella.

What we don’t understand can give rise to fear. Copernicus, the 16th-century astronomer died of natural causes in 1543 because he was smart enough to leave instructions that his book claiming that the earth revolves around the sun be published after his death. Giordano Bruno who came after wasn’t as lucky, he came to the same conclusions that Copernicus did, and he was burned to death as a heretic.

We can always choose to reject or resist what we don’t understand. But that’s not where I’m at. I enjoy reading about those things that make my eyes go wide with wonder and cause my heart to skip a beat because…. what if?

Whatever our reality may be - in this life, we could all do with a little bit more MAGIC.
